What Office 365 plan should I choose for my business?

So, you’re making the move to the cloud, or looking to check you have the best Office 365 plan for your business needs. It can be confusing to say the least, but don’t worry, there are plenty of useful solutions available in Office 365 from home users, to enterprise businesses. You have no less than 7 choices of packaged products in the business and enterprise range, and then all the standalone options that might be a fit for you as well.  

Because of the range of options, this article is best suited for SME’s up to 300 users as we’ll just be concentrating on the Office 365 Business Plans that have this as a subscriber limitation.  

The three plans that the business range covers are: 

  1. Office 365 Business Essentials 
  2. Office365 Business 
  3. Office 365 Business Premium 

 

We’ll also talk about Office 365 Exchange Online as a standalone email subscription.

Office 365 Business Essentials  

Business essentials is a package that includes email and online applications only, so not desktop software such as Outlook, Word, Excel etc, but there are online (web apps) included, these are: 

  1. Outlook 
  2. Word 
  3. Excel 
  4. PowerPoint 
  5. Microsoft Teams  
  6. Skype for Business  

 

Storage provided 

  • 50Gb email mailbox and use of your own domain name. 
  • 1Tb of OneDrive storage per user, or if you have 5 or more subscribers this raises to 5Tb 

 

Pricing 

£4.50 per user / per month – If you wish to have a flexible month to month subscription. 

£3.80 per user / per month – if you commit to a year subscription, but paid monthly. 

 


 

Office 365 Business  

Business is a package that only includes cloud storage and desktop Office applications, Business grade email is not included in the package, only the outlook software.  

The office 2016 package includes: 

Web Versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint are also included. 

Each licenced user can install Office on up to 5 devices covering PC, Mac and Smartphone / Tablets 

 

Storage provided 

  • 1Tb of OneDrive storage per user. 

 

Pricing 

£7.90 per user / per month – If you wish to have a flexible month to month subscription. 

£9.60 per user / per month – If you commit to an annual subscription, but paid monthly. 

 


 

Office 365 Business Premium 

Business Premium is a package that includes business grade email, desktop applications and their online versions as well. The desktop applications are: 

 

Each of these applications (apart from Access) have their own Web App included as well as some additional services including: 

  1. Microsoft Forms  
  2. Microsoft Planner  
  3. Microsoft Delve  
  4. Microsoft Sway 
  5. Microsoft Video 

 

Storage provided 

  • 50Gb email mailbox and use of your own domain name. 
  • 1Tb of OneDrive storage per user, or if you have 5 or more subscribers this raises to 5Tb

£11.30 per user / per month – If you wish to have a flexible month to month subscription. 

£9.40 per user / per month – if you commit to a year’s subscription, but paid monthly. 

 

So that’s the basic run down of each of the business packages you can get with Office 365. It’s worth remembering that you can mix and match the subscriptions, which is particularly useful if you need those in the office to have ‘Business Premium’, but then only give those on the road ‘Business Essentials’.  

I mentioned earlier ‘Exchange Online’, this is an Office 365 subscription for a business grade mailbox only, useful when you need a full featured mailbox to be shared, or for a remote user etc. The cost of this is £3 per user / per month.
